Esports and statute amendments are among the main items on the agenda at the International Basketball Federation's (FIBA) first online Mid-Term Congress.

The meeting of FIBA's membership, being held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is due to take place tomorrow.

Proposed amendments to the FIBA statutes, approved by the Central Board at its meeting in March, include the adoption of further gender guidelines in line with FIBA's women in basketball strategy.

Changes which will allow basketball's worldwide governing body to hold meetings online are also set to be passed, while the Congress is expected to reaffirm that electronic forms of basketball, in particular esports, falls within FIBA's scope.

The Congress will hear reports on FIBA's activities that have occurred since the last gathering of the membership, which took place before the 2019 Basketball World Cup in China.

"Over the next two years we will continue strongly, based on our principles of unity and solidarity, which have helped us so much during the pandemic, in order to deliver on the strategic objectives approved by the FIBA Congress 2019 for the benefit of our National Federations and the entire basketball community," FIBA President Hamane Niang wrote in the organisation's mid-term report.
