Anna van der Breggen triumphed on the final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas at Lagunas de Neila to secure victory in the general classification.

The 121-kilometre fourth stage from Quintanar de la Sierra to Lagunas de Neila saw a group of 30 riders break clear early on.

Riders were gradually dropped from the move throughout the stage, with only four remaining on the final climb of the day, which began with 12 kilometres to go.

Australia’s Amanda Spratt led the four rider group into the closing kilometres, but their one minute advantage did not prove enough as they were caught by the chasers.

Dutch rider Demi Vollering caught the riders in the final kilometre, but was unable to hold off the challenge of van der Breggen.

The world champion sprinted to victory in a time of 3 hours 24min and 15sec.

Annemiek van Vleuten finished as the runner-up on the same time, with Vollering rounding off an all-Dutch top three.

The stage win was enough for van der Breggen to earn the overall race victory, ending three seconds clear of van Vleuten.

Vollering was third at 23 seconds back.

New Zealand’s Niamh Fisher-Black had led the race heading into the final stage, but was distanced on the final climb to ultimately drop out of the top 10.
