Costa Rica celebrated a third consecutive title at the North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Futsal Championship after overcoming United States 3-2 in a closely contested final in Guatemala City.

The defending champions came from behind yesterday to win their semi-final against Panama and were forced to do so again by the US.

Lucho Gonzalez struck early in the contest for the Americans but goals from Daniel Gomez and Juan Cordero saw Costa Rica turn the match around at Domo Polideportivo.

The US responded to going behind in impressive fashion as Zach Reget produced a delicate lob over Costa Rica's goalkeeper to level the score, with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Gomez restored Costa Rica's advantage on the brink of half-time.

His second goal of the contest would prove decisive, with a goalless second half seeing the Central Americans hold on to win.

Costa Rica have now won the continental futsal title four times, following previous victories in 2000, 2012 and 2016.

Hosts Guatemala finished the competition on a high by beating Panama 3-2 in the third place playoff.

Roberto Alvarado and Walter Enriquez scored either side of a strike from Abdiel Ortiz to give Guatemala a 2-1 advantage.

Panama's top scorer Carlos Perez scored his eighth of the tournament to force extra time, however.

Fernando Campaignac settled the contest after finding the net with a right footed effort deep into the additional period to avoid penalties.

The four top teams all qualified for the FIFA Futsal World Cup which is scheduled to be played in Lithuania in September and October.
