British Blind Sport, Birmingham City Council, the University of Birmingham and UK Sport have all combined to make a successful bid for the Games.

They are now in the process of forming a Board which will include current stakeholders as well as the independent members.

The purpose of the Board will be to "provide oversight and strategic direction to the development, planning and staging" of the Games.

It is hoped that the three independent members will "understand the role that sport, participation, elite Para-sport and major events can play in society".

The IBSA World Games are due to take place from August 18 to 27 in 2023, at the University of Birmingham, the Edgbaston arena and in the wider region.

More than 1,000 athletes from more than 70 nations compete at the IBSA World Games, which feature three Paralympic sports and eight non-Paralympic sports.

The Games are held every four years and are considered the major event on the blind sport calendar outside of the Paralympic Games.

Birmingham is also due to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
