World number one Chen Meng triumphed at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Women's World Cup in Weihai as top-level competition returned for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The top seed defeated Chinese team mate and third seed Sun Yingsha 11-13, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 to claim the trophy at her first attempt.

In doing so, Chen also became the first winner of the ITTF's #RESTART series, which has delivered the return of international table tennis events in China after eight months of suspended activity due to the global health crisis.

Competition took place at the newly-opened Weihai Nanhai Olympic Center with safety measures in place.

Chen was crowned women’s singles champion at the 2020 China National Championships at the same venue last month.

"Last month, I also won a title in the same venue and now this World Cup is a high point for me," she said.

"I feel very happy to be stood here with the trophy.

"This will help my confidence going into the next tournament and I hope that at the ITTF Finals in Zhengzhou I can continue my good form and win another title."

Chen’s path to victory included dominant wins over both Bernadette Szocs of Romania and Lily Zhang of the United States before a seven-game thriller against Germany's Han Ying in the semi-finals.

The 26-year-old Chen held off Han to triumph 4-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-4.

It was also a debut Women's World Cup campaign for Sun, who booked her place in the final against Chen after overcoming Japanese second seed Mima Ito 12-10, 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 4-11, 11-4.

Ito then claimed bronze, easing past Han 11-2, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4.

The #RESTART series continues with the ITTF Men’s World Cup, scheduled for November 13 to 15 in the same venue.
