Jeff Smith and Matt Campbell thoroughly outplayed heavy favourites Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan at Salzburgarena in Austria, winning 5-2.

Ireland - runners-up in 2019 - were the only other seeds knocked out in round one, falling 5-2 to Australia despite having a better average. 

Superior doubling from Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta saw them through, with Heta impressing on his World Cup debut.

Poland await the Aussies in the last 16, following a 5-0 thrashing of South Africa. 

Top seeds England were made to work against the Philippines, but came through 5-3, while Dutch pairing Michael van Gerwen and Danny Noppert averaged 94.00 in beating Brazil 5-1.

Scotland were champions in 2019, but with Peter Wright and Gary Anderson not playing this year, it is up to unseeded John Henderson and Robert Thornton to defend the crown.

They made an unconvincing start, barely averaging more than 80, but overcame Japan to set up a second-round meeting with Wales, the second seeds.

Contests in round two will be played over the best of three matches, with all eight encounters scheduled for tomorrow.

The PDC's flagship international competition is due to reach its climax on Sunday (November 8).
