South Africa will begin the defence of their Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship title on the opening day of the regional event tomorrow.

Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe are the 14 members of COSAFA.

A total of 10 nations are set to compete in the Women’s Championship, which will run until November 14.

Hosts South Africa, seeking a fourth consecutive title, face competition from Angola, Eswatini and Comoros in Group A.

The defending champions will begin the campaign tomorrow when they play Angola after Eswatini’s clash with Comoros.

Group B features three teams with Zambia, Lesotho and Malawi vying for top spot.

Botswana and Zimbabwe will play in Group C alongside Tanzania, who are participating as guests at the COSAFA event.

The group winners will automatically advance to the semi-finals.

The best runner-up will also progress.

Competition is taking place at both the Wolfson Stadium and Gelvandale Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay.

This year’s competition is the eighth edition of the tournament.

South Africa have won the tournament on six occasions, including the inaugural event in 2002.

Zimbabwe are the only other champions after they beat South Africa 1-0 in the 2011 final.

The COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championship is also scheduled be held concurrently with the senior tournament, but in a reduced format.

The men's COSAFA Cup was cancelled last month due to the coronavirus pandemic and the packed football calendar.
