usa_paratriathlon_05-08-11August 3 - Some of America's top paratriathletes will be competing at the 2011 USA Paratriathlon National Championships in New York on Sunday (August 7).

The Championships will see athletes competing across six different categories for places in the Team USA squad for the 2011 ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Beijing.

To qualify for the World Championships, which take place from September 9, athletes must complete the Olympic distance course - 1.5 kilometres swim/40km ride/10km run - in under four hours.

The race is part of the New York City Triathlon, with competitors swimming in the Hudson River, cycling along Westside Highway and running down 72nd street towards Central Park.

Melissa Stockwell, the defending world champion, is set to take part along with nine other members of the US national squad.

Paratriathlon is not among the sports for the London 2012 Paralympic Games but the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) approved its inauguration at a Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.
