Bahrain–Merida's Dylan Teuns moved into the overall lead at the Vuelta a España, as Spaniard Jesús Herrada won a sixth stage marred by a nasty crash.

The crash, which occurred after around 100 kilometres of the 198.9km route from Mora de Rubielos to Ares del Maestart, forced four riders to abandon the race.

Ireland's Nicolas Roche, who started stage six in fifth on the general classification, was among the withdrawals.

Roche was joined by Colombia's Rigoberto Urán, Spain's Víctor de la Parte and Britain's Hugh Carthy.

American Tejay van Garderen, who rides for EF Education First, also crashed later in the race.

Cofidis' Herrada emerged victorious from the chaotic stage as he crossed the line in 4 hours 43min 55sec, seven seconds ahead of new leader Teuns.

Herrada takes the lead from Colombian Miguel Ángel López, who is now a minute behind the Spaniard in third.

David de la Cruz of Spain sits second in the general classification standings.

Herrada's triumph came after brother Jose narrowly missed out on a stage win yesterday.

"It’s incredible to win this stage and even more so in a stage that I had marked in the road book," Herrada said,

"I dedicate this to my brother, who was close to the victory."

Tomorrow's seventh stage sees the riders tackle a 183.2km route from Onda to Mas de la Costa.
