Australia and New Zealand began their 2019 International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup campaigns with easy wins over Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, respectively.

Reigning champions Australia saw off Afghanistan in Bristol by eight wickets after New Zealand had earlier thrashed a limited Sri Lankan side by 10 wickets.

Afghanistan chose to bat first but lost openers Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai for ducks

Najibullah Zadran top-scored for the Afghans with 51, sharing an 83-run partnership with captain Gulbadin Naib – who made 31 – for the sixth wicket.

Eventually, Afghanistan reached 208 all out, which never looked likely to be enough against a potent Australian attack.

In response, openers Aaron Finch and David Warner hammered their way to half centuries, with Warner booed by the home fans on reaching the landmark following his recent ban for ball tampering.

Eventually, Naib earned the breakthrough, having Finch caught for 66, before Usman Khawaja was trapped leg before wicket by Rashid Khan.

Steve Smith – also returning from an ICC suspension – was caught cutting with Australia requiring three to win, again to the enjoyment of the English fans.

Warner saw the Aussies home with a score of 89 not out.

Earlier, New Zealand dismantled Sri Lanka with ball and bat as the Asian side collapsed to 136 all out in 29.2 overs.

Only captain and opener Dimuth Karunaratne resisted, carrying his bat for 52 not out.

Matt Henry was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, with three wickets including two in two balls.

At one stage Sri Lanka lost five wickets for 14 runs.

In response, Kiwi openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro raced to their target in just 16.1 overs with unbeaten scores of 73 and 58, respectively.
