Reigning world champion Alejandro Valverde of the Movistar team won the third stage of the UAE Tour as Slovenian Primož Roglič retained his overall race lead.

The Spaniard pipped Roglič, who rides for Team Jumbo-Visma, and Frenchman David Gaudu in Jebel Hafeet following a mountainous 179 kilometres trek from Al Ain.

The result saw Valverde claim his first win since he was crowned world champion in the road race in Innsbruck last year.

Valverde also earned victory on the corresponding stage of last year's Abu Dhabi Tour, an event largely won by cyclists who thrive on the climbs.

He finished today's stage in a time of 4 hours 44min 50sec, beating Roglič and Gaudu into second and third respectively.

Roglič remains in the overall lead after his squad triumphed in the team trial event during the first stage of the race.

"I felt really good today, there was quite a bit of wind but I felt good," said Valverde.

"The climb started quite quickly.

"I just had to follow Roglic and do exactly what I've done.

"I won here last year, and I knew how to take on the climb bit by bit.

"I've won a stage and I really want to win the race but we're going to have to wait and see."

Tomorrow's fourth stage sees the riders tackle a 205km route from Palm Jumeirah to Hatta Dam.
