Britain's Sochi 2014 gold medallist Kelly Gallagher and France's quadruple Pyeongchang 2018 champion Marie Bochet won both their morning and afternoon runs en route to gold on the opening day of the World Para Alpine Skiing Europa Cup in St Moritz.

The Europa Cup - the second-tier World Para Alpine Skiing circuit, below the World Cup.- resumed in Switzerland after the postponement of the last two scheduled events in Pyha, Finland and Pitztal, Austria due to poor weather.

Meanwhile, World Para Alpine Skiing has announced that the World Cup in Sella Nevea in Italy, has also been cancelled due to weather conditions.

The competition was due to take place from December 19 to 21 as the opening World Cup of the 2018-2019 season.

Zagreb, in Croatia,  is now due to host the opening World Cup event of the season on January 16 and 17.

Sella Nevea and Kranjska Gora in Slovenia are scheduled to jointly host the 2019 World Para Alpine Skiing Championships from January 21 to February 1.

The World Cup will then continue with more five events - at Kranjska Gora on February 3 and 4; Veysonnaz in Switzerland from February 7 to 10; at the Spanish resorts of Espot from March 3 to 9, and La Molina, from March 11 to 15, and finally at Morzine in France from March 18 until 21.

Gallagher, guided by Gary Smith, won in the women’s giant slalom vision impaired category after posting times of 56.53sec and 57.42 to finish with 65.16 points.

The silver medal went to Australia’s Melissa Perrine, guided by Bobbi Kelly, who totalled 85.43 points, with Gallagher’s team-mate Menna Fitzpatrick earning bronze on 97.41.

Gallagher’s performance of winning both runs was matched by France’s Marie Bochet in the women’s giant slalom standing category.

Bochet clocked 53.15 and 52.86 for a superb race points total of 0.00.

The silver medal went to Canada’s Alana Ramsey, second on both runs, who totalled 14.03 points, with bronze going to her compatriot Frederique Turgeon, who totalled 44.48.

All the other categories raced today saw different winners in the first and second runs.

In the women’s giant slalom sitting category, the gold medal went to Germany’s seven-times Paralympic champion Anna Schaffelhuber, second in the first run behind Victoria Pendergast, who took full advantage when the Australian failed to finish her second run.

Schaffelhubler won the concluding run in 58.77 to earn a wnning total of 97.09 points, with the silver medal going to her team-mate Anna-Lena Forster, a double Paralympic champion, who totalled 134.26.

Bronze went to Japan’s Momoka Muraoka, Pyeongchang 2018 champion at this event, who scored 154.29 points.

Slovakia's Marek Kubacka, guided by Mária Zatovičová, earned overall victory in the men’s giant slalom vision impaired class, finishing third in the first run and winning the second in 52.39sec to total 47.81 points.

Austria’s Josef Lahner, winner of the first run with his guide Franz Erharter, was disqualified on the second run along with the man who had finished one place behind him in the morning, Italy’s  Pyeongchang 2018 champion Giacomo Bertagnolli,

Silver went to Miroslav Haraus of Slovakia with 51.18 points, and bronze was earned by Spain’s Maiztegui Santacana, who totalled 94.23.

Consistency earned the prize for Sweden’s Aron Lindstroem in the men’s giant slalom standing class as he finished second in each of the runs to earn a race points total of 0.00.

Alexis Guimond of Canada won the second run, but his fourth place in the opener meant he had to settle, narrowly, for silver with a total of 2.59.

Bronze went to Austria’s Markus Salcher, third on both runs, who scored 7.00 points, while the winner of the opening run, Mitchell Gourlay of Australia, missed the podium after sixth-place in run two saw him total 8.64.

Unfortunately, home favourite Theo Gmur did not start.

Jeroen Kampschreur of The Netherlands was overall winner in the men’s giant slalom sitting event after winning the first run and coming second in the second to earn a total of 50.40 points.

Silver went to his team-mate Niels de Langen, who won the second run after coming fourth in the first to total 76.59.

Switzerland’s Christoph Kunz took the bronze medal with 88.61 points.
