The Czech Republic’s Martin Šonka suffered an early exit in the round of 14 on the second day of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Indianapolis  as home favourite Michael Goulian took the win and the top spot on the overall standings.

Former leader of the master class World Championship overall standings, Šonka was knocked out of the competition in the round of 14 as he could not match the time of his opponent, Kirby Chambliss.

Chambliss had a poor qualifying session which saw the American in last place going onto the final day.

His time of 1min 05.140secwas too quick for Šonka, who finished his run 1.323 seconds behind.

With Šonka out so early in the competition, the event was open to a new leader.

Goulian did not perform in the round 14 either at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway course.

The eventual winner lost his heat five race too, but his time of 1:05.182 was enough to progress to the round of eight as a fastest loser.

His run in the final four round was 0.528 seconds quicker than Canada’s Pete McLeod, France’s Micolas Ivanoff and Great Britain’s Ben Murphy.

By winning the race, Goulian became the first American pilot to win over home soil since 2008 and he claimed the top spot on the overall standings.

With Šonka only scoring one point in 10th position, he drops to second place in the overall standings.

Goulian’s win gave him 15 points and a total of 70 points to take the top spot.

Šonka is five points behind with Australian Marr Hall in third place with 63 points.

In the challenger class, Florian Bergér spoilt the party for the home fans hoping for a double American win.

American Kevin Coleman posted the fastest time before Germany’s Bergér pipped him by 0.263 seconds for the win.

Bergér tops the overall standings with Hong Kogn’s Kenny Chiang in second and Poland’s Czepiela in third.

Coleman is now fourth.

The Red Bull Air Race is now due into its season finale on November 17 to 18 in Fort Worth in Texas.

Here the master class and challenger class world champions will be crowned.
