All of the world’s top-50 players are set to compete at the World Golf Championships (WGC)-Bridgestone Invitational this week with eight-time champion Tiger Woods among those vying for glory.

Woods will be playing in his first WGC event since the 2014 Bridgestone Invitational.

The 14-time major winner made it into the field at Ohio’s Firestone Country Club thanks to his joint sixth-place finish at last month’s Open at Carnoustie in Scotland.

He won the inaugural instalment of the event back in 1999 before defending his title in 2000 and again in 2001.

Woods also enjoyed victory in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2013.

He has been paired with former world number one Jason Day of Australia for the first two rounds.

They will follow the group that includes defending champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan and 2014 winner Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland.

McIlroy, who has a further four top-10 finishes to his name at the event, is among the players to watch having finished joint second at The Open.

World number one Dustin Johnson of the United States will be competing on the back of his win at last week's Canadian Open and vying to repeat his triumph from 2016.

He is in a group with recent Open champion Francesco Molinari of Italy.

England’s Justin Rose is also likely to be in contention, despite never having won the event.

He has five career top-five finishes at Firestone.

Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, will be playing his 20th WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The five-time major champion is the only player to have competed in every edition since 1999.

He is playing alongside fellow American and Fed Ex Cup champion Justin Thomas for the first two rounds.

The par-70 course covers 7,400 yards.
