Hosts Finland, seeking to extend their record number of victories in the European Championship of American Football, got off to a good start in Vantaa today as they won their opening Division A match against Great Britain 28-7.

Since this event, now organised by the International Federation of American Football Europe, began in 1983, Finland have won it five times - the last occasion being in 2000.

The 2018 tournament - originally due to be held in Germany - started earlier in the day with a meeting between Division B sides Denmark and Austria, which the latter side won 40-15.

The home team will now have to wait until August 2 to play the other team in their division, France, who will meet Britain next.

Similarly, Austria will wait until August 2 to play the third team in their qualifying group, Sweden, who will meet Denmark on Tuesday (July 31).

The final placement matches are all due to take place on Saturday, August 4.

This year's European Championships were switched from Germany with numerous factors being cited, including qualifying matches that were not played in time and allegations of financial problems.

Neither Germany, who might have expected to qualify as hosts and holders, nor Italy, four-times winners who came through the qualifying competition, have been included in the finals.
