Jeremy Henry suffered his first defeat of the Bowls World Cup but remains in the lead of the men’s section one standings at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club.

The defending champion had performed superbly on the opening four days of competition but India’s Dinesh Kumar was able to end the streak with a surprise win.

Kumar overcame his Australian opponent 8-3, 7-10, 5-3.

The loss is unlikely to have a major impact on Henry, who remain out in front on 24 points from his matches to date.

Malta’s Brendan Aquilina had the opportunity to close on the Australian but he suffered a 12-4, 14-3 defeat to South Africa’s Pierre Brietenbach.

It left him joint second in the standings on 18 points, along with Matt Le Ber of Guernsey.
