Akane Yamaguchi survived a scare to advance into the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation German Open in Mülheim today.

Yamaguchi, the top seed in the women's singles draw, recovered from a second set loss before edging the third against Chinese Taipei's Pai Yu Po.

She eventually prevailed 21-17, 19-21, 24-22 in 57 minutes to set-up a quarter-final with United States' Zhang Beiwen.

Zhang beat Aya Ohori of Japan 21-17, 8-21, 21-10.

South Korea's second seed Sung Ji-hyun also progressed at the Innogy Sporthalle.

She did so in far more comfortable fashion, though, 21-14, 21-14.
