Davide Astori, an Italian national footballer and captain of Serie A club Fiorentina, has died at the age of 31.

The club announced on their official Twitter feed that he  had passed away following a "sudden illness".

It has been reported by Udine Today that he failed to wake up this morning and died in his sleep at the La di Moret hotel in Udine.

All matches in Serie A scheduled for today, including Fiorentina's match with Udinese in which Astori had been due to play, have since been called off.

"Fiorentina are profoundly shocked to have to announce the death of captain Davide Astori after a sudden illness," the statement said.

"Given this terrible and delicate situation we appeal to everyone's sensitivity at this time, above all out of respect for his family."

Astori won 14 caps for Italy and had made 58 appearences for Fiorentina since joining them from Cagliari in 2016.

He previously spent eight years at AC Milan after coming through the youth system.

This included loan spells at Roma and Fiorentina before his permanent move.

Astori was a member of the Italy squad for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

He scored his only international goal in the third-place playoff against Uruguay, which was won by Italy on penalties.

He also became a father for the first time last month.
