Sixteen people have been injured after high winds ravaged the Gangneung Olympic Park where ice sports are taking place during Pyeongchang 2018.

Organisers confirmed that a total of 13 staff and three spectators suffered minor injuries as tents and equipment were blown over by heavy gusts yesterday afternoon.

They suffered minor scratches and cuts and the workers were sent home to recover.

All outside activities had been suspended as general admission to the Park was closed at 4:30pm local time.

The wind has since dropped.

Pyeongchang 2018 spokesperson Sung Baik-you confirmed that 60 tents had been damaged and 120 fences had collapsed.

"Eighteen tents were taken away and three were emergency reinforced," he said today.

"Some of the fences had collapsed and steel fences surrounding them also.

"There were a lot of signages that were blowing away and shaking and we had to reinforce them."

Speed-skating, ice hockey and curling events in indoor venues within the Olympic Park took place as planned.

Competition was postponed, however, in Alpine skiing and biathlon.
