Indonesia defeated China in the final of the men’s Badminton Asia Team Championships at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Setar.

Shi Yuqi had got first seeds China off to a good start in the first men’s singles tie of the day as he took the opening game against Jonatan Christie 21-16.

The three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medallist, however, recovered well to put Indonesia 1-0 up in the tie as he took the next two games 21-17, 21-18.

Mohammad Ahsan and Angga Pratama carried this momentum into their doubles match against He Jiting and Tan Qiang and secured a 21-19, 21-18 win.

Qiao Bin gave China hope in the second singles tie with a 21-12, 11-21, 21-14 win over Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

Eventually, however, Rian Agung Saputro and Hendra Setiawan made sure Indonesia defended their title with a 21-14, 21-19 win over Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong, giving their side a 3-1 victory overall.

There was more disappointment for China in the women’s tournament as they lost 3-0 to relinquish the title they won in 2016 to Japan.

Akane Yamaguchi, a silver medallist at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, defeated Chen Yufei 21-16, 12-21, 21-14 in her singles match to hand Japan the initiative.

Rio 2016 silver medallists Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi then doubled Japan’s lead in the doubles with a 21-13, 21-16 victory over Du Yue and Li Yinhui.

Nozomi Okuhara, a bronze medallist at Rio 2016, clinched the title for Japan after coming back from a game down against He Bingjiao to win 19-21, 21-16, 21-10.

The Asian Championships acted as a qualifier for the Thomas and Uber Cups, the biennial World Championships contested by men's and women's national teams.
