A Women and Gender Equality Commission has been established by the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and held its first meeting of the Tokyo 2020 cycle.

During the first gathering of the Commission, chaired by COE vice-president Isabel García, the group "laid the foundations" for development projects which will be initiated during the next two years.

Garcia, the President of the Spanish Salvage and Lifeguard Federation, and secretary Victoria Cabezas, who also serves as the general secretary of the COE, were among the attendees at the meeting.

A brief study that reflects the current situation in terms of equality between men and women in the field of sport is among the first items planned for this year, according to the COE.

The Commission also discussed ensuring they have greater visibility in the media, while the group is also hoping to educate youngsters in the field of equality.

This is so that future generations in the European nation can grow in an environment of equality, where men and women are treated the same in sport and in other areas, they claim.

The COE's Commission is set to propose a number of measures which could form part of a new draft of the country's sports law.

The group is consulting with a wide range of Spanish sports federations and organisations for feedback.
