South Africa kept alive their hopes of a fifth place finish at the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup by comfortably beating hosts New Zealand today in Christchurch.

In a vastly improved batting performance from their group stage defeat to today's opponents earlier in the tournament, South Africa scored 284 for six from their 50 overs today at the Hagley Oval.

Matthew Breetzke scored 115 off 122 deliveries while Raynard van Tonder managed 117 off 129.

New Zealand never looked like mounting a serious challenge and, despite an 82-ball 74 from Dale Phillips, were bowled out for 211 in 43.5 overs.

Gerald Coetzee took five wickets for the loss of just 32 runs.

It means South Africa will face the winners of tomorrow's match between England and Bangladesh in Queenstown in the fifth place playoff.

The European side scored 288 for six at Lincoln Green as Harry Tector scored 101.

Namibia were then bowled out for 186.

Kenya also won a much tighter 15th place playoff over Papua New Guinea by just 14 runs at the Rangiora Recreation Ground.

They scored 176 before bowling their opponents out for 162 with nine balls to spare.
