Hosts Australia stormed into the quarter-finals of the Women's World Rugby Sevens Series event in Sydney with three straight victories.

The home crowd were able to enjoy a strong series of displays from the Australian team at the Allianz Stadium, with the Olympic champions ending the day without conceding a single try.

Australia opened their Pool A campaign with a 29-0 victory over Spain, before brushing aside Papua New Guinea 50-0.

They sealed top spot in the pool with a comfortable 43-0 success against France.

Portia Woodman was among the star performers for the Australian team, as she scored 10 tries across their three matches.

Australia will meet Spain again in the quarter-finals, after they finished third in the pool by beating Papua New Guinea 29-0, having lost to France by a 22-0 scoreline.

France's reward will be a quarter-final tie against Canada, who claimed three straight victories en-route to topping Pool C.

They began with consecutive 24-12 wins over Fiji and Ireland, before claiming a 19-5 success against Russia.

Canada concluded their pool matches with a 19-5 triumph against Russia.

New Zealand proved untroubled in Pool B, with their team securing a 48-7 win over Japan, before beating England 33-12.

A dominant performance then saw them overcome the United States 31-0, with the result seeing the Kiwis set-up a last eight tie with Ireland.

The US will face Russia in the fourth quarter-final match.

The men’s event began with New Zealand securing a 61-0 win over Russia in Pool A, with Fiji then beating Samoa 31-5.

France secured a 31-12 victory over Wales, with Argentina then joining them at the top of the Pool B standings by beating Kenya 7-5.

South Africa began their campaign with a comprehensive 50-0 win over Papua New Guinea in Pool C, following England's 22-10 triumph against Spain.

Hosts Australia won 26-19 in their first Pool D match, before Scotland rounded off the day by beating Canada 52-2.
