Anti-Olympic campaigners in Annecy have announced a rally to "celebrate" the French city's failed bid for the 2018 Winter Games.

The event will take place on February 10, one day after the Opening Ceremony of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

It will be hosted at 3pm at Le Pâquier in the city, a huge area of grass.

Pyeongchang was elected as the host city for 2018 at the International Olympic Committee Session in Durban in 2011, receiving 63 votes in round one.

Annecy tallied just seven with German city Munich receiving 25.

According to a press release from The Annecy Anti-Olympic Committee (CAO), which campaigned against the bid and collected thousands of signatures of support, €30 million (£26 million/$37 million) was "squandered" on the failed candidature.

They said they now wanted to thank opponents of the bid who contributed to its failure, while also protesting about other projects they view as a waste of money.

"In 2011, Annecy's bid to host the Winter Olympics suffered a stinging defeat, with only seven ridiculous votes out of 95," the CAO said.

"In 2018, Korea launches the Games in the usual frenzy, during a worthless party but at exorbitant cost.

"While in Annecy, the Anti Olympic Committee will celebrate the failure of the Annecy 2018 candidacy to which we largely contributed.

"We will take this opportunity to thank all those who by their actions have helped the CAO to undermine this damn candidacy that cost us so much, but that would have cost us much more if it had been successful.

"Thanks to all those women and men who worked, in the shade or in the light, we preserved threatened farmland, spared mountain areas, protected the Pâquier from a monumental stage and avoided expenses inconsiderate for a futile and outdated competition."

France has since been awarded an Olympic Games as Paris will host the 2024 Summer edition.

The CAO said the capital's residents who are against the Games should take action.

"We have been at the forefront of the fight against the Olympics and, while many cities do not agree and refuse the organisation of the Games, we can only encourage all those, especially the Parisians, who are fighting against this kind of useless project, to harden their actions and not to let go of the manipulators who claim to lead us," they added.

"We will also take the opportunity to remind the supporters of the bid that they will always find us in their way, if they had the presumption to retry their luck."

Public protest has killed off many Olympic bids, including in Boston, Hamburg, Budapest and Innsbruck.
