UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has appointed Charlie Bosomworth as its new head of communications, it was announced today.

It follows the appointments of Hannah Duncan and Nick Sargent who both took up roles at UKAD at the beginning of last month as communications manager and communications officer respectively.

Bosomworth previously worked as media manager at the Lawn Tennis Association.

He will report to Emily Robinson, who joined UKAD as director of communications in February 2017.

Robinson, the former deputy chief executive of the charity Alcohol Concern, has undertaken a review and restructure of the department and while the overall headcount has not increased, the new roles have put increased emphasis on digital communications and social media designed to improve engagement with athletes, stakeholders and the public, it is claimed.

UKAD have come under criticism in recent months following controversy over their failure to find out what was in a mystery Jiffy bag delivered by British Cycling to Sir Bradley Wiggins at the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2011.

They were also criticised internationally last month after they reached a compromise agreement with former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury which saw him accept a backdated two-year doping ban for testing positive for elevated levels of nandrolone in February 2015 without accepting any responsibility.

"The team will play a pivotal role in supporting UKAD’s vision to inspire confidence in clean sport," said Robinson.

"We want to make anti-doping easier to understand for our stakeholders and the public while of course protecting the integrity of our ongoing cases and investigations.

"We are looking ahead to several major communications projects over the coming months, including the publication of our new organisational strategy, improving our online presence and running the second 'Clean Sport Week' which takes place in May this year."
