The 59 kilogram, 66kg, 80kg and 130kg categories of the Greco-Roman event of the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships were played out today at the Artego Arena in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

In the most anticipated match of the day, Russia's Sergey Semenov beat Georgia's Zviadi Pataridze, who was looking for his sixth world title, by a scoreline of 5-3 in the 130kg event.

The two contestants were breathing heavily by the end of their match but the 2016 Olympic bronze medallist eventually managed to pull through to claim the gold medal.

Prior to the headline event between Pataridze and Semenov, the 59kg weight category saw Masuto Kawana of Japan, who came through a close semi-final, defeat Russia’s Sergey Emelin in a tight contest between two Junior World bronze medallists with the final score reading 15-14 in favour of Kawana.

In the 66kg event, it was a battle between two eastern Europeans as Shmagi Bolkvadze of Georgia took on Russian Alen Mirzoian.

In the end it was Bolkvadze, a bronze medallist at Rio 2016 and 2014 Junior World champion, who came out on top - winning 2-0 against the 2017 Russian Championships bronze medallist.

Turkey's Burhan Akbudak, who came third at the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, came away with the gold medal in the 80kg event, beating Lasha Gobadze, the 2015 Senior World bronze medalist, of Georgia by VPO1, 2-1.

Prior to the final matches, there were 12 bronze medal matches, which were all fairly one-sided affairs.

This was particularly the case in the 59kg category, where Aidos Sultangali and Sakit Guliyev, from Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan respectively, both produced 8-0 victories.

The fifth day of the event in Bydgoszcz sees women's wrestling take centre stage, with the finals starting at 18:00 local time.
