France's world number one Gregory Gaultier was among players to book his spot in the quarter-finals of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Qatar Classic today.

Round two matches took centre stage at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha with Gaultier, the 2015 world champion, easing past Zahed Sherin Salem of Egypt to reach the last eight.

Gaultier won 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 to progress in the PSA World Series event.

There was no joy for the defending champion and reigning world champion Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt, however.

He was out-lasted 11-7, 11-8, 3-11, 11-9 by Germany's Simon Rösner.

England's triple world champion Nick Matthew also advanced with a 13-11, 11-9, 11-3 success against Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet.

Thirty-seven-year-old Matthew is due to retire at the end of the season and enjoyed more routine passage after his first round win over German opponent Raphael Kendra went the distance.

Egypt's Tarek Momen needed five to oust Australia's Cameron Pilley.

The match swung both ways before Momen prevailed 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 10-12, 11-7.

Another Egyptian, former world number one Mohamed Elshorbagy, knocked out his compatriot Fares Dessouky 11-9, 14-12, 11-8.

Last eight matches will be held tomorrow.
