Dutch star Kirsten Wild successfully defended her elimination race title to win the opening gold of the 2017 European Cycling Union (UEC) Elite Track Championships in Berlin as France also enjoyed a day to remember.

The 35-year-old Wild defeated Russia's Evgenia Augustinas in the miss-and-out format to repeat the victory she secured last year.

Italian Maria Giulia Confalonieri took the bronze medal.

It came on the first of a four-day continental event featuring 338 riders - 120 women and 218 men - from 28 countries competing at the German capital's Velodrom.

Adrien Garel of France also secured victory in the scratch race today.

The 21-year-old defeated Hungary's Krisztian Lovassy and the bronze medal was taken by Roman Gladysh of Ukraine.
