Durham batsman Jack Burnham has been handed a one-year ban following a positive test for a recreational drug.

The English county cricket club state that the test occurred as part of the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) illicit drugs policy.

Burnham provided a hair sample to testers in early September, which resulted in a positive test for a recreational drug.

"I am bitterly disappointed in my actions, I’ve let my team-mates, members and supporters down," Burnham said.

"I will work exceptionally hard to retain my fitness and carry out the rehabilitation procedures that have been put in place."

The 20-year-old batsman will be supported by Durham, the ECB and Professional Cricketers Association (PCA), the club have revealed.

According to The Daily Telegraph, it is the third time Burnham has failed a test for recreational drugs.

The first failure is deemed a lifestyle issue and dealt with via support from the PCA, under ECB regulations.

It has been reported that when Burnham failed a second test earlier this year he was banned for 21 days but Durham stated he had an injury at the time.

The third positive test has resulted in the 12-month suspension.

Burnham would face a three-year ban if he fails another test.

"We are aware of the situation surrounding Jack Burnham and we will continue to work closely with Durham and the ECB to support Jack," at PCA statement read.

“There is an illicit drugs policy in place and we are very much part of that policy.

“All current players are made aware of the policy and the consequences of any breaches of the policy, during our programme of pre-season visits to the first-class counties and MCC Young Cricketers.”

Burnham has scored a total of 1,018 runs in 26 first-class matches for Durham and recently signed a two-year contract with the Division Two team.
