Around 1,750 athletes, representing 26 countries, are due to compete with Latvia’s Maris Strombergs, the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic champion, among the men’s elite field.

Current world champion Joris Daudet of France and The Netherlands’ Niek Kimmann are tipped for success.

Germany’s Sarah Sailer will aim to defend her women’s title, but is expected to come under pressure from The Netherlands’ Laura Smulders, Russia’s Yaroslava Bondarenko and Denmark’s Simone Christensen.

“We are about to experience a historic edition of the European BMX Championships in Bordeaux, in a unique setting,” said UEC President, David Lappartient, who is currently a candidate for the same post at the International Cycling Union.

“We will witness a top level event in keeping with tradition in a discipline that we strongly believe in and have always invested in.

“The huge success of the full live streaming of the 10 UEC BMX European Cup rounds, the live TV coverage of the men and women elite races in Bordeaux, thanks to the agreement with the EBU and the ever increasing interest from insiders and others and in terms of those practising the sport, are the best proof that BMX still has significant growth opportunities.”

Junior competitions will also take place at the Championships.

Cruisers and challenge events have also been scheduled.

Competition is set to be held on a temporary track which has been constructed in front of Place des Quinconces, one of the largest city squares in Europe.

The UEC believe the venue will be ideal for the cyclists who will be taking part, with fans expected to be attracted to the event due to its city centre location.
