The Philippines are through to the quarter-finals of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 3x3 Under-18 World Cup after securing two victories in Chengdu today.

The Asian country put themselves on the brink of securing second place in Group A with a 20-14 win over Poland earlier today at a court set up outside the Global Center in the Chinese city.

Later in the evening, they faced Turkmenistan, knowing they must win in order to secure their spot in the last eight.

They did not disappoint as they went on to claim a 21-14 victory.

The Netherlands are also through as they secured top spot in Group A with 21-11 and 21-16 victories over Poland and Israel respectively.

Awaiting the Philippines in the next round are a strong Belgian team who maintained their 100 per cent record today.

They first defeated Romania 18-11 before dispatching Uganda 20-14.

The Romanians still advanced though after they recovered from that defeat to beat Indonesia 21-7.

In the women's competition, Russia secured top spot in Group C.

Despite losing their first match of today 14-13 to Italy, they recovered to see off Venezuela 19-14 to guarantee first place.

China won both of their Pool C matches to qualify in second.

They claimed a narrow 18-17 win over Venezuela in the first match today before edging Argentina 16-15 in their second.

Competition also concluded in Group B with the Czech Republic and Germany advancing.

The Czechs thrashed Andorra 20-8 before beating Sri Lanka 21-19.

Germany endured a mixed day after winning their first match 16-13 against The Netherlands before slipping to a 21-20 defeat to Andorra.

Emma Eichmeyer of Germany leads the scoring after three days of competition with 34 points from four games.

Action is due to continue tomorrow with the final round of pool stage matches.

The top two from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals on July 2, which will be followed by the semi-finals, third-place play-off and final on the same day.

The 3x3 discipline was officially added to the programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games earlier this month.
