Del Rosario Delgado, a former Peruvian Karate Federation President, will replace José Quiñones in the post after clinching 16 votes in favour, three against and one null.

His term will run until 2020 and he becomes the 26th incumbent of the position.

The election was held at the main headquarters of the COP, located in Videna, and was overseen by former Pan American Sports Organization secretary general Jimena Saldaña. 

Quiñones was banned last December by Peru's national sports court from holding any position in the country's governing bodies. 

"It is an honour to have been elected by overwhelming majority as President of the COP," said del Rosario Delgado.

"It is an honour and a commitment that I assume for the national sport.

"I know that it will be a challenge to move forward the institution of the state in which it is and to have the level and prestige that the COP has always had and should never have lost."

Napoleón Valdez was elected vice-president and Carlos Manuel Lazarte will fill the role of secretary general.

The new leadership is expected to be in place by July 4.

Former COP secretary general Francisco Boza Dibós faces up to five-years in jail on charges of collusion and criminal conspiracy.

The 52-year-old, an Olympic silver medallist at Los Angeles 1984 in trap shooting, carried the Peruvian flag at the Opening Ceremonies of Athens 2004 and Rio 2016,

Leaked emails allegedly showed a connection to Martin Belaunde, a businessman and former Presidential advisor currently in jail for corruption and embezzlement.

Boza supposedly asked Belaunde to use his influence in Congress to approve funding for the 2013 Bolivarian Games in Trujillo, while he was head of the Peruvian Institute of Sports.

This allegedly led to Spanish construction company Antalsis, a client of Belaunde, being awarded the contract to redesign the Elias Aguirre Stadium.

Boza denies all wrongdoing but has admitted he made a "mistake" in trusting Belaunde. 

After being arrested in October, Boza was ordered to pay PEN25,000 ($7,700/£5,900/€6,700) in bail and await trial under house arrest.

One of Del Rosario's first jobs will be to oversee preparations for this year's International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session, where the vote on the host city of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games is scheduled to take place.

Peruvian capital Lima was awarded the event during the 2014 Extraordinary IOC Session in Monte Carlo and the event is due to take place between September 13 and 17. 

It is set to be the first time the Session has been held in Peru and only the fourth occasion in South America following Montevideo in 1979, Buenos Aires in 2013 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Los Angeles and Paris are the two remaining bidders in the race for the Games in seven years' time.

It is assumed that Paris will be awarded the 2024 edition and Los Angeles the event four years later.

Del Rosario also takes office during ongoing financial problems surrounding the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima.

A payment of $3.3 million (£2.5 million/€3 million) is still owed by the COP in rights fees to PASO.

COP spent money initially given by the Government for this payment on another outstanding debt relating to the 2013 South American Youth Games held in Lima.

They had so far been unable to persuade the Government to pay them again.

The Pan American Games are due to take place from July 26 until August 11 in 2019.

It will be followed by the Parapan American Games from August 23 until September 1.
