Playground, a hit by German dance music act Cascada, has been chosen as the official song of the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships which start this week.

The season's showpiece men's event is due to take place between May 5 and 21 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, and the AccorHotels Arena in French capital Paris.

British lead singer Natalie Horler has also been named as an official ambassador for the event.

This was announced during a special event in Cologne in which Horler was honoured by Organising Committee President Franz Reindl.

Cascada, a band who have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, are best known for hit singles such as Everytime We Touch and Rhythm of the Night.

They have enjoyed number one hits in countries participating at the World Championships including the United States, France, Sweden and Canada.

A special video has also been brought out featuring German national ice hockey team player Moritz Muller.

"We are very happy that with Cascada we could allure a global musical export from Germany to provide the official song for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship," said Reindl.

"With our wonderful and globally renowned official mascots Asterix and Obelix, the one great pillar of our fan entertainment programme comes from France, our hosting partner country.

"Now, with Cascada and their official song Playground, the other major element of our entertainment programme comes from Germany, but is equally popular in France and all other 14 participating nations of the tournament.

"Thus, Cascada are a perfect match with our motto 'Together for 2017'".

Cascada will perform live on various occasions during the Championships, with full details due to be announced soon.

"We feel honoured that Cascada were chosen for the official song of the French-German 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship," added Horler.

"When the idea was introduced to us, we didn't have to think it much over.

"We are extremely excited about being able to contribute to a great atmosphere in the tournament venues and really wish that the fans will enjoy Playground

"Producing the official song video on ice was an all-new and exciting experience for me."

During the tournament, 16 teams will compete for the title, split between two groups.

Canada are the reigning champions, having beaten Finland 2-0 in the final last year in Moscow.
