Johanna Konta became the first British female to reach the final of the Miami Open as she beat Venus Williams of the United States in straight sets at the Crandon Park Tennis Center.

Konta, the current world number 11, picked up her third consecutive victory over the veteran American as she progressed with a 6-4, 7-5 win.

The Briton will take on former world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who ousted Czech second seed Karolína Plíšková 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the other semi-final.

"Caroline's one of the best athletes on tour, so I know I am going to be running for a lot of balls," said Konta.

"I'm looking forward to it, it is going to be a battle and I will try my best."

Swiss star Roger Federer booked his place in the semi-finals of the men's tournament as he overcame Tomáš Berdych of the Czech Republic.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion continued his recent resurgence with a battling display but was made to work hard for his 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 victory.

The 35-year-old was on the brink of a quarter-final exit but he saved two match points.

Federer, who has won 17 matches and lost just one so far this year, will take on Nick Kyrgios in the last four after the Australian beat Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

"I’m happy today to have come through somehow," said Federer.

“I definitely got very lucky at the end.

"But I think I showed great heart today, Tomas really started to step it up and it was a great match at the end.”

Federer remains on course for yet another meeting with Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who goes up against unseeded Italian Fabio Fognini in the other men's semi-final tomorrow.
