Taekwondo athletes from the Solomon Islands are being urged by the country's governing body to resume training to prepare for upcoming tournaments.

Global licence athletes and officials are being asked to return to practice for competitions taking place in the coming months.

A statement from the Solomon Islands Taekwondo Union (SITU), which represents the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in the country, issued the rallying call "as there are regional and international tournaments that require prompt preparation for participation".

The first major tournaments cited by the SITU are the New Zealand Taekwondo Open and the Oceania Para Taekwondo Open, both of which are due to take place in Auckland in New Zealand between May 13 and 14.

The SITU also asked athletes to begin training for the 2017 WTF World Taekwondo Championships, which will be held in Muju in South Korea between June 24 and 30.

Action is due to take place at Muju's dedicated taekwondo facility, the 4,500 capacity Taekwondowon.

"The athletes who represented the Solomon Islands at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby and the 2016 Solomon Games are recommended to attend training immediately," a statement from the SITU said.

Training is set to take place at the Honiara City Council Multi-purpose hall every Monday and Friday.

All of those wishing to resume training are required to renew their global athlete license.
