Wales secured their maiden women's pairs title at the World Bowls Championships after edging out the host nation in the final in Christchurch.

Jess Sims and Laura Daniels stormed into a 5-0 lead during the early stages of the match, putting them well on track to secure the title.

Their advantage over Jo Edwards and Angela Boyd of New Zealand continued to grow as they reached the halfway stage of the final with the score reading 9-2 in their favour.

A sprited comeback from the home pairing threatened to cause a dramatic turnaround, with New Zealand ultimately drawing level to force an extra end.

The Welsh pair would hold their nerve in to eventually seal victory in the final by a 16-15 scoreline.

"Anyone who knows me will find this hilarious - I'm absolutely speechless, I don't know what to say," Sims told Sky Sports.

"Watching Jo's last bowl come up was just torture.

“I knew she wouldn't be far away.

"We just couldn't believe it."

Shannon McIlroy would ensure the Championships ended on a high for the host nation, as he became New Zealand's second male singles champion.

He would be forced to hold off a fightback from Canada’s Ryan Bester in the final, but ultimately came through to win the match 21-17.
