Australia's Aaron Wilson and Brett Wilkie triumphed in the men’s pairs final in Christchurch, the duo earning a comfortable victory in the New Zealand city today.

Seeking to earn only Australia’s third men’s pairs title, the Wilson and Wilkie made a strong start to the final against Ireland’s Ian McClure and Gary Kelly.

They triumphed in the fifth end of the match by three shorts and repeated the feat on the ninth, helping the pair move into a 9-2 lead by the halfway point of the contest at Burnside Bowling Club.

Despite the best efforts of McClure and Kelly they were unable to close the gap to their rivals in the latter stages of the contest.

It led to the pair conceding defeat after the 17th end, with the score reading 18-6 in Wilson and Wilkie’s favour.

Their triumph marked an end to Australia’s long wait for a men’s pairs gold at the Championships, with the country’s last victory in the event coming back in 1980.

"If I failed, Aaron always stepped up," Wilkie told SkySport afterwards.

"We got on really well and enjoyed each other's company."

There was further success for the Australian team when defending champion Karen Murphy retained her women's singles crown.

Murphy ecured a 21-13 victory against Scotland's Lesley Doig in the gold medal match following a tightly contested start to the contest.

The victory saw Murphy become the first Australian to win successive World Championship singles titles.
