Russia’s Sergey Murashev began his International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Championships campaign with a win as he bids to add the global title to his European crown at the Sibur Arena in Saint Petersburg.

Murashev, who clinched the European Youth Championships gold medal in the Russian town of Anapa earlier this year, comfortably progressed to the next round of the light heavyweight competition by beating Georgia’s Artom Yordanyan.

The home fighter did not have it all his own way, however, as Yordanyan was awarded the bout on one scorecard, with the other four in favour of the Russian.

Murashev’s compatriot Nikolai Matveev had no such issues as he breezed to a unanimous victory over Indonesian Petrus Luturmas in the flyweight division.

He was joined in round two by Ruslan Rustamov of Azerbaijan, who was involved in a gruelling battle with Sebastian Arbuz of Romania.

Following a close-knit affair, Rustamov was given the fight on three scorecards to progress via split decision.

In the middleweight division, Matej Uremovic of Croatia produced one of the performances of day two of the event, stopping Kyrgyzstan’s Makhammadiusuf Akbarov in the second round to progress in style.

His showing will certainly have caught the eye of the other boxers in the competition.

Denmark’s Michel Terteryan emerged victorious from an all-Scandinavian middleweight affair, beating Santeri Laine of Finland 5-0, while Bayram Malkan of Turkey overcame South Korea’s Jeong Joohong by the same scoreline.

Samer Tabal of Sweden was another boxer who was able to earn victory by technical knockout as the referee called a halt to his light welterweight contest with Zine El Abidine Amroug of Morocco in the second round.

Ronald Chavez Junior of the Philippines had to do it the hard way, sealing a split decision success against Karoly Botos of Hungary in the same weight division.

All 10 Olympic weight categories will be contested in Saint Petersburg, with the competition due to take place until November 26.
