Papua New Guinea’s opening day party fell flat at the FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup as they were thrashed 9-0 by a ruthless Brazilian side at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

Gabi Nunes, Brena and Yasmim all scored twice, while Duda, Katrine and Geyse also managed to get on the scoresheet as the South American outfit ran riot against the first-ever Oceanian hosts of the event.

Brazil started at a pace the Papua New Guinean side simply could not live with and they were 4-0 up after just 24 minutes in the Group A encounter.

They scored twice more before the break and added another three in the second half to complete the rout as Papua New Guinea were humbled in front of their own supporters.

In the other match to be held on the first day of the competition in the Pacific nation, European champions Sweden’s campaign for glory on the world stage began with disappointment as they were beaten 2-0 by North Korea.

Goals from Ri Hyang Sim and Kim So Hyang were enough to give the Asian Championships runners-up the perfect start to the tournament as they inflicted a shock defeat on the Swedes, who clinched a surprise silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

There were also convincing scorelines in the two Group B clashes at Bava Park in the Papua New Guinea capital as Japan, who are hotly-tipped to reach the latter stages of the competition, cruised to a 6-0 win over Nigeria.

Mami Ueno was the star of the show for the Japanese as she bagged a hat-trick, while Yuka Momiki scored either side of the break and the sixth came thanks to a Mary Ologbsere own goal.

Spain were also in good form as they hammered Canada 5-0.

The tournament continues tomorrow when defending champions Germany get their pursuit of a second successive title underway when they take on Venezuela in Group D.

The other match in the group sees Mexico play South Korea.

In Group C, France play the United States and Ghana entertain New Zealand.

Papua New Guinea was officially confirmed as the host of the tournament over a year ago after world football’s governing body agreed to let the country host all matches in Port Moresby.

There were concerns that the country may be stripped of the event due to sub-standard facilities outside of the capital but the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) addressed FIFA’s fears and were given the all clear.
