Germany’s Marc Zwiebler booked his place in the second round of the men’s singles event at the Bitburger Open with a comfortable straight games victory over compatriot Philip Discher at the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken.

Zwiebler, the 2012 European champion, is seeded third for the tournament on home soil and is therefore expected to reach at least the semi-finals.

Thankfully for the crowd inside the venue, an early exit for the current European bronze medallist never looked likely as he cruised to a 21-13, 21-11 win against his team-mate.

Dieter Domke emerged triumphant from the other all-German affair to take place in the main draw of the men’s singles today as he beat David Peng 22-20, 21-13.

It proved to be a largely straightforward day for the seeded players on the opening day of action at the tournament, part of the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) Grand Prix Gold series.

Singapore’s Ihsan Maul Mustofa, seeded sixth, came up against a tricky opponent in Siril Verma but was able to dispatch the Indian player 21-17, 21-16.

Sourabh Verma, winner of the recent Chinese Taipei Masters, managed to earn a victory for India as he ousted Rüdiger Gnedt of Austria 21-16, 21-11.

Sourabh’s younger brother Sameer, the 12th seed recently crowned as the Indian champion, followed his sibling into round two by overcoming Germany’s Alexander Roovers 21-11, 21-11.

Jonatan Christie, a member of the Singapore team which won the team title at this year’s Asian Championships along with Mustofa, is also through.

The tournament’s fifth seed accounted for Subhankar Dey of India with a 21-19, 21-18 success.

Home favourite Kai Schaefer caused one of the biggest upsets on day one as he beat 13th seed Emil Holst of Denmark 21-14, 21-13.

Main draw action is due to continue tomorrow in the men's and women's singles, as well as men's and women's doubles.
