Four-time Olympian Alessandra Sensini was joined by fellow sailor Giulia Conti and fencers Valerio Aspromonte and Margherita Granbassi at a meeting at Rome 2024 headquarters.

London 2012 taekwondo gold medallist Carlo Molfetta, Beijing 2008 judo champion Giulia Quintavalle and Tania Di Mario, who won women’s water polo gold at Athens 2004, were also present.

The working group, who have won 13 Olympic medals between them, also contains divers Tommaso and Nicola Marconi.

The group met for the first time today, with general coordinator Diana Bianchedi joining in with the meeting.

“With this working group we want to take advantage of their experience at the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Diana Bianchedi, general coordinator and two-time Olympic fencing gold medallist.

“This morning we had a constructive dialogue and shared our views on the Rome 2024 bid with the athletes.

“Their experience is at the centre of our project and their contribution is crucial to guarantee that we create the best environment for the athletes that could be here in our city in 2024.

“Our proposal for the Games aims to provide them with a unique experience from the Athletes’ point of view and to let them live for few weeks the Italian way of life.”

Despite campaigning continuing, the Italian capital's campaign is shrouded in doubt because of lack of support from the city's new Mayor Virginia Raggi.

Raggi, who represents the anti-establishment Five-Star Movement, has continually refused to back the bid.

Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, though, has regularly offered his support to Rome 2024, claiming it would help transform the city.

Rome, along with rivals Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris, is due to present the second part of its Candidature File to the IOC by October 7.

Without financial guarantees from the City Council, the bid may not be allowed to continue by the IOC.

A decision is due to be made at the 2017 IOC Session in Lima on September 13.
