The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has announced the appointment of Lovemore Kanyoza as the governing body's new projects officer.

He was recruited after the MOC conducted an interview process, with the role initially advertised in the media.

MOC President Oscar Kanjala said the position would be a "liasion role" between the organisation's board and partners.

The position was required because of changes introduced by the International Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation, he said.

“The Projects Officer will help us improve our performance of projects management," Kanjala told the Nyasa TImes.

"The Projects Officer will be an interface with board members, associations and our partners.

“The Projects Officer would  manage structures and infrastructures and coordinate with our official partners such as Commonwealth Games Federation in the absence of board members.

“For example ahead of Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia there will be a lot of engagements because the conditions of qualifying have changed.”

Malawi sent five athletes to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Areneo David competed in men's archery, while Kefasi Chitsala and Tereza Master were in action in track and field.

Brave Lifa and Zahra Pinto were in swimming action in the pool.

The African country has never won an Olympic medal.
