China’s Chen Aisen and Lin Yue added the Olympic gold medal to their world title with a dominant display in the men’s 10 metre synchronised platform event at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio de Janeiro today.

The pair headed into the competition as the overwhelming favourites to claim the Olympic title, having won their world crown by a margin on nearly 50 points in Kazan last year, as well as having dominated this year’s International Swimming Federation (FINA) Diving World Series.

Their first two dives of the six round competition were awarded a score of 57.00 points, their early tally of 114.00 seeing them pull away from their rivals from the beginning.

A spectacular third dive received a total of 92.82 points, extending their advantage further, despite the best efforts of second place David Boudia and Steele Johnson.

The Americans attempted to close the gap to the Chinese pair, but their hopes of an upset were extinguished when their rivals fifth dive scored 9.5s across the board, giving Chen and Lin the highest scoring effort of the competition with a 106.56 points.

Boudia, a bronze medallist at London 2012 with Nicholas McCrory, and Johnson were rewarded for their efforts by pulling away from the chasing pack to all but secure bronze.

It left the bronze medal to be the decided, with Britain’s Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow heading into the last dive narrowly ahead of Germany’s Germany's Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein.

The Germans, silver medallists at Beijing 2008, failed to overtake the British duo when it mattered as the scored a finishing total of 438.42 points to Daley and Goodfellow’s 444.45.

There was no doubt about the gold and silver medallists, though, with China taking the title on a huge score of 496.98 points, while Boudia and Johnson settled for silver on 457.11.

It continued China's record of winning the event at every Olympic Games since Athens 2004.

"We did really well in our performance today, very stable,” said Lin.

“We did our best, but I don't think it was perfect, all I can say is that we did our best.

“It was like a dream.

"The only thing in my mind is that I have to do all I can do for my family to thank them for supporting me."

The victory continued China’s quest to claim all eight diving gold medals at the Games, having already won the women’s 3m synchronised event yesterday.

Their next target will be tomorrow’s women’s 10m synchronised platform event.
