The company handed over the cash in last year's Pacific Games host city Port Moresby, the capital, to the country's Rio 2016 Chef de Mission Emma Waiwai. 

Sir John Dawanincura, the President of PNGOC, was also on hand to receive the cheque.

The Trukai Fun Run, which offered t-shirts for sale, helped to raise the funds ahead of the Olympics.

Trukai’s General Manager for Sales and Marketing, Andrew Daubney, said: "The event assisted in raising funds for the team to go to Rio to participate in the biggest sporting event in the world.

“We are very pleased to support the PNG Olympic Committee with this funding for Team PNG going to Rio for the Olympic Games."

Dawanincura highlighted the importance of the Fun Run to the country's athletes.

“The Trukai Fun Run is one of our major fundraising events and regardless of how many shirts we sell, we are guaranteed a minimum of K500,000 from Trukai as part of their sponsorship," he said.

“We rely heavily on corporate support for our events and Trukai has been a great partner for a long time and we appreciate their continued support."

Swimmer Ryan Pini, boxer Thadius Katua, judoka Raymond Ovinou, taekwondo players Maxemillion Kassman and Samantha Kassman, weightlifter Morea Baru and track and field stars Toea Wisil and Theo Piniau will be among the Papua New Guinea team in Rio.
