Jona Efoloko won the boys' 200 metres gold medal to cap off an extremely successful day for Great Britain at the European Athletics Youth Championships in Tbilisi.

The 16-year-old clocked a season’s best time of 21.15sec to finish 0.03 seconds ahead of nearest challenger Kasper Kadestål of Sweden and a further 0.06 seconds clear of Spain’s Pol Retamal in third.

Efoloko’s win ensured a third victory of the day for Britain following success for Isabelle Boffey in the girls’ 800m and Jake Heyward in the boys’ 1500m.

Boffey led a British one-two ahead of Anna Burt, posting a time of 2:07.19 to beat her team-mate by 1.35 seconds.

Slovakia’s Gabriela Gajanová rounded out the podium with her time of 2:09.43 condemning Bulgaria’s Liliana Georgieva to fourth spot.

As for Heyward, he crossed the line in 4:00.64 to top a podium that also featured France’s Pierre Proust, second in 4:01.62, and Spain’s Enrique Herreros, third in 4:02.06.

Britain also medalled in the boys’ 110m hurdles and the girls’ 200m through the performances of Jason Nicholson and Alisha Rees respectively.

Nicholson took bronze with his time of 13.45 seeing him end up 0.06 seconds behind winner Dániel Eszes of Hungary and 0.03 seconds behind runner-up Tuur Bras of Belgium.

Rees’ time of 23.70 sandwiched her between France’s Marine Mignon, the gold medallist in 23.35, and Czech Republic’s Nikola Bendová, the bronze medallist in 24.00.

Among the other winners on the track today were Poland’s Łukasz Niedziałek in the boys’ 1,000m race walk in 44:06.49, as well as Italy’s Desola Oki in the girls’ 100m hurdles in 13.30, and Denmark’s Anna Mark Helwigh in the girls’ 2,000m steeplechase in 6:34.52. 

Belarus’ Ihar Zubko and Romania’s Andrea Miklos won the respective boys’ and girls’ 400m finals in 47.16 and 52.70, while out in the field, there were victories for Finland’s Alina Strömberg in the girls’ pole vault with 4.15m, Germany’s Lukas Mihota in the boys’ high jump with 2.18m, Latvia’s Kristaps Jaunpujens in the boys’ javelin throw with 77.01m, and Moldova’s Alexandra Emelianov in the girls’ shot put with 18.50m.

Action in Georgia’s capital is due to conclude tomorrow.
