Milos Raonic triumphed in an absorbing five set clash with Switzerland’s Roger Federer at Wimbledon today to become the first Canadian man to reach a Grand Slam final, where he will take on home favourite Andy Murray.

The 25-year-old, who was born in Montenegro, faced an uphill task as Federer had triumphed in each of his previous 10 semi-finals at the All England Club.

However, he was rewarded for a strong start by taking the first set, 6-3.

Federer was able to shift the momentum of the match by beating Raonic in a second set tie-break, before breaking his rival en-route to taking the third 6-4.

The seven-time champion had appeared on course to take the fourth set into a tie-break after several tight games, but two consecutive double faults helped Raonic to claim a crucial break and force the tie into a decider.

A fall and the fatigue of his five-set quarter-final match with Marin Cilic began to take its toll on Federer, with the 34-year-old twice requiring treatment as the game headed to a conclusion.

Raonic was able to take full advantage and eventually wrapped up a 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The 25-year-old will now look to claim Canada’s first Grand Slam title, with Eugenie Bouchard having finished as the runner-up in the women’s singles event at Wimbledon in 2014.

Britain’s Murray will stand in Raonic’s way, after the 2013 champion stormed to victory against the Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych.

The world number two traded breaks of serve with Berdych at the start of the match, but gradually took control of the contest and claimed the opening set 6-3.

Despite Berdych’s best efforts he proved unable to turn the match around, with Murray making only nine unforced errors en-route to a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory and a place in his third Wimbledon final.
