A Federation of Billiard Sports has been established in Turkmenistan as the Asian nation steps up its preparations for the next year's Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG).

The Federation was launched with a 60-player tournament in the country’s capital city Ashgabat, with the participants coming from various regions across Turkmenistan.

Begench Aydogdiyev eventually emerged as the victor at the close of the tournament, as he recorded a 7-5 win over Batyr Ashirov in the final.

It is hoped that the federation will help to prepare players to compete in international competitions such as the AIMAG.

In an effort to increase the number of players available to represent the nation, the Federation are now set to establish local branches throughout Turkmenistan.

Billiards and snooker will be one of 21 sports contested at the Games, along with chess, futsal, tennis, Muay Thai, sambo, kurash, jiu jitsu and bowling.

Track cycling, swimming, indoor athletics, weightlifting, basketball, taekwondo, dance sport, kickboxing, belt wrestling, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling will also take place in the 5th edition of the Games.

A total of 45 Asian National Olympic Committees are due to take part in the Games, along with 17 from Oceania.
