A study in France claims Paris staging the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games could provide €10.7 billion (£8.3 billion/$12 billion) in economic benefits to the country and create as many as 250,000 jobs in the surrounding Île-de-France region.

The results of the report, conducted by the Centre for Law and Economics of Sport (CDES) at the University of Limoges, have been described as “very encouraging” by Paris 2024 co-chairman Bernard Lapasset.

It could be seen as a boost to Paris’ bid to host the Games in eight years’ time, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) keen on cities demonstrating the benefits staging the Olympics and Paralympics would bring to the whole nation.

Paris 2024, in conjunction with the French National Olympic and Paralympic Committees and local stakeholders such as the City of Paris, have also developed a “White Paper” legacy plan to help in this area.

According to the Bid Committee, it will establish a set of legacy criteria for Paris 2024 to follow and would involve a plan to maximise benefits across society for the country.

A host of key officials are set to come together to draw up the “White Paper”, such as financial experts, members of the Sports Movement and individuals from the state.

“As we continue to develop our bid for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the results of this study are very encouraging,” outgoing World Rugby chairman Lapasset said.

“Beyond the wonderful festival of sport that the Games would bring, there is a real opportunity for the whole of France to benefit from an economic point of view but also in terms of a lasting social legacy for all of our citizens.”

Dedicated polls to gauge public opinion about the French capital’s bid for the Games, including what they feel will be the main legacies should they be successful in their efforts, will also be set up by Paris 2024.

It follows the news that latest opinion polls concerning the bid are running at more than 70 per cent in favour, according to the bid’s chief executive Etienne Thobois.

“We welcome today’s report on the economic impact of Paris 2024 which shows the huge benefits that hosting the Games can bring for Paris and France,” Thobois said.

“The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a unique opportunity to place sport even more firmly at the heart of our society and to utilise the values of Olympism to contribute to the education of young people.”

Budapest, Rome and Los Angeles are also bidding for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

The IOC is due to elect the host city at its Session in Lima in 2017.
