Karatekas from 30 countries are due to participate in the sixth leg of the Karate-1 Premier League season starting in Rabat tomorrow.

It will mark the first time the Moroccan capital has hosted a leg of the World Karate Federation (WKF) organised event, with it hoped that home athletes will rise to the occasion.

These are set to include world junior, cadet and under-21 champion Achraf Ouchen in over 84 kilograms kumite division and four-times Karate-1 Premier League medallist Abdelilah Boujedi in the male kumite under 67kg event.

They will be joined by leading international stars. 

These are set to include two-time European champion Vanesca Tania Nortan from The Netherlands in the women's over 68kg event, and Brazil Valeria Kumizaki, winner of the Salzburg-leg of the series.

Spain’s kata European champions Damian Quintero and Sandra Sanchez will be among other favourites.

The event follows on from successful Karate-1 Premier League legs in Paris, Sharm El-Sheikh, Rotterdam, Dubai and Salzberg is a major way for the sport to showcase itself as it bids for inclusion on Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020. 

Legs are also still due to come in Istanbul, Fortaleza, Hamburg and Okinawa.

Action is due to begin in the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium tomorrow, with individual male and female kate contests.

Kumite events will take place on Sunday (May 22).

Entry is free for all spectators.
