Seli announced his resignation earlier this year after being found guilty of conflict of interest due to also being chairman of the Supervisory Board of Port of Tallinn, a major EOK sponsor.

He was criticised for voting in favour of the state-owened company contributing €250,000 (£195,000/$285,000) of sponsorship to the EOK in October 2013.

This violated the Estonian Anti-Corruption Act, which prohibits an official from participating in the making of a decision if its outcome affects the interests of the official or a person connected with him.

Seli was also fined €17,000 (£13,000/$19,000) and ordered to pay procedure expenses.

Sõõrumaa, 55, is one of the Baltic nation's best known businessmen who has previously sat on the EOK Executive Committee.

He collected 61 votes in the second round to narrowly beat former Tallinn Mayor Juri Ratas, who secured 60 votes.

Four-time Olympic sailor Tonu Toniste was eliminated in the first round but was subsequently named vice-president. 

Siim Sikles will remain secretary general. 

Sõõrumaa has previously served as President of the Estonian Tennis Association while also sitting on the Board of the Estonian Volleyball Association.

Estonia first competed at an Olympic Games at Antwerp 1920, three years before the establishment of the National Olympic Committee.

They have subsequently competed at 10 Summer and nine Winter editions, although Estonian athletes competed as part of the Soviet Union team at every one between 1948 and 1988.

The Baltic nation has won nine all-time golds, with the most recent having been won by discus thrower Gerd Kanter at Beijing 2008.

Kanter also won bronze at London 2012, while Greco Roman wrestler Heiki Nabi claimed silver.
